A Car Free Day get together last year in Chillerton Road

There is just under a month left to apply to host a street party on this years’ Car Free Day.

Residents are reminded that it is free to apply for a road closure to close their road to traffic and turn them into play areas and party venues for the day.

Car Free Day on September 22 is an annual event which brings families, residents, and communities together in a safe place without the fear of cars, trucks or lorries getting in the way. It also helps reduce air pollution.

Applications to hold a Car Free Day event between 20 and 22 September will close on August 16

Any street can apply to take part, providing it isn’t a main road, bus route or emergency vehicle route.

Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “We want children to get the chance to play outside safely, so we encourage families to take advantage of Car Free Day and spend the day with their neighbours having fun.

“It’s all part of our ongoing work to make our streets safer and our air cleaner such as encouraging walking and cycling and setting up School Streets."
