Transform your neighbourhood into a buzzing community celebration by hosting a free street party to mark this year’s Car Free Day in September.

Street parties are a great way to meet your neighbours, build community spirit, create safe spaces for children to play, and enjoy walking and cycling – and we’re waiving fees to host a celebration for Car Free Day.

Car Free Day on 22 September is an annual event which brings families, residents, and communities together in a safe space without motor vehicles, reducing air pollution.

Applications to host a Car Free Day event over the weekend of 20 to 21 September will be open from 11 July to 5 September.

Street parties usually cost £64 but those held to mark Clean Air Day in June and Car Free Day in September are free of charge, to encourage residents to come together.

Any street can apply to take part, providing it isn’t a main road, bus route or emergency vehicle route – see how Wandsworth’s residents celebrated the VE Day 80th anniversary with 58 street parties around the borough.

Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “What better way to celebrate Car Free Day than by organising a fun community event bringing together your neighbours, family and friends in a safe and sustainable way?

“A neighbourhood street party is a fantastic chance to get to know your local community better, as well as giving children the chance to play outside on their street safely, and improve air quality for everyone.

“Apply now to host a free street party on 20-21 September and make the most of experiencing motor traffic-free spaces.”
