In recognition of the amazing work carried out by BAC in supporting local arts and culture, councillors have agreed to extend its rent-free period to 2035, ensuring more money can be invested in Wandsworth’s vibrant and valuable creative arts scene.
The arts centre has charitable status and is based in Battersea old town hall in Lavender Hill and has been supporting the arts in Wandsworth since 1974.
Council deputy leader and lead spokesperson on arts and culture Councillor Kemi Akinola said she was delighted the council would “continue to offer such tangible and effective support” to BAC.
She added: “BAC is not just Wandsworth’s but one of the UK’s leading cultural organisations, playing a vital role on the local, regional and national stage.
“It is celebrated both nationally and internationally for its pioneering approach and its residency in the borough offers Wandsworth residents a unique cultural resource, supporting both creative engagement and employment.
“Not only does it bring significant footfall to the borough, over a third of their audiences have always been very local, appreciating the ground-breaking and unique work it provides on their doorsteps. Most of their shows are offered as Pay What You Can, and with almost universal relaxed performances, making them more accessible to local underserved communities than any other London theatre.”
In a written presentation to councillors, BAC stated: “Battersea Arts Centre is a home for radical artistic ideas. Since 1974, we have pioneered creative change. Based in an old town hall with a radical social history, we have transformed the lives of young people, kick-started creative careers, and helped communities connect through making and sharing art.
“An active voice in culture for diversity & anti-racism, led by people of colour at CEO & Chair level. BAC’s mission and plan for the next ten years closely aligns with Wandsworth Council’s new Arts and Culture Strategy to make Wandsworth a prosperous, healthy and attractive place to live. BAC is leading the way nationally in demonstrating the central role arts and culture can have in building healthier, happier and more connected communities.”
BAC is also a key partner in Wandsworth’s bid to be named London Borough of Culture 2025 which promises to showcase the fantastic creativity found throughout the borough and build on the power of culture to change lives, connect people and improve wellbeing.
Its Artistic Director and Chief Executive Officer Tarek Iskander added: “At a time when so many councils are cutting back on arts and culture funding, we’re exceptionally lucky to have such brilliant support from Wandsworth Borough Council.
“2024 is an incredibly special year as we celebrate our 50th anniversary as an arts centre. BAC has always been part of a thriving arts community in Wandsworth, and that is in no small part due to the vital support we receive from the council, who continue to reaffirm their belief in the importance of arts and culture to public life.
“We’re delighted to be playing a part in the bid to become the next Borough of Culture, and with such crucial backing from our local council, we can continue our mission to ensure BAC is a home for extraordinary artists, young people and communities for the next 50 years and beyond.”
The council’s decision on rent means that in future years the arts centre will save up to £270,000 which can be reinvested in Wandsworth’s creative arts.
