Following consultation with the local community, we refined the scheme to ensure it works for as many people as possible – bringing real improvements that support active travel, improve safety, and encourage everyone to take pride in our streets.
Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "We want everyone in Wandsworth to feel safe and confident using our streets – whether they’re walking to school, cycling to work, or simply enjoying their local area. That’s why we’re investing in better crossings, smoother pavements, and more pedestrian-friendly streets as part of our Walking and Cycling Strategy.
“As a listening Council, we’ve asked for your views, and taken those into account to help create a scheme that works for everyone. Now we’re delivering those real improvements that will benefit the whole community.”
What’s happening now?
Contractors are on-site and making good progress, with key improvements already taking shape:
- A new Copenhagen crossing (a pavement that extends across a road junction) at Sandgate Lane, giving pedestrians clearer priority.
- Over 150 metres of footway have been replaced so far, making pavements smoother and safer.
- Work has been completed for a new zebra crossing on Beechcroft Road, making it easier for pedestrians to cross.
- Work has been finished in preparation for TfL to install a Toucan crossing, creating a key link for cyclists and pedestrians travelling to Wandsworth Common.

Freddie, who was visiting his partner in nearby Tooting commented: “I regularly walk around the Burntwood Lane roundabout and have felt that its safety could be improved. I look forward to the new zebra crossings and other road improvements making Wandsworth safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.”
Work at Burntwood Lane will continue over the coming months and is scheduled to be completed in early 2026.
It is part of Wandsworth’s biggest ever programme of roads and pavements improvements in decades, with over £10 million set to be invested this year.
The investment comes as part of the council’s Decade of Renewal, doubling investment in our roads and pavements over 10 years.
