Local elections to be held 7 May

Council elections will be held on Thursday 7 May. Local people will have the opportunity to choose their ward councillors.

Anyone eligible who wishes to vote must make sure they are registered by midnight on 20 April. This can be done quickly and easily online at gov.uk/register-to-vote

All eligible voters will be sent a poll card through the post with information about how to vote.
When you vote in person you will need to show photographic ID. To find out which ID you can use in the polling station, visit Voter identification. If you do not have an accepted form of ID you can get a free Voter Authority Certificate, but you must apply by 28 April. Find out more and apply at Apply for photo ID to vote (called a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’).
If you are unable to vote in person, you can vote by post, but you must apply for a postal vote by 21 April. Find out more (including the expected mailing dates) at Voting by post.
You can also ask somebody to vote on your behalf by applying for a proxy vote. For those who are currently a polling station voter, the deadline to apply is 28 April. Find out more at Voting by proxy.
We are working with our libraries to make sure everyone gets support to be ready to vote. Go along to your local library to use their computers if you need to, or to get help scanning a QR code on your phone.
